Summary

For what seems like decades, organisational leaders have been violently agreeing with the need to “be more data-driven”. Why then does the concept keep resurfacing in new guises, what will it take to generate the necessary change, and how can that change be made sustainable?

Without answering these questions, data leaders are left with a dilemma, which is particularly acute in the older organisations that dominate manufacturing and the public sector. On the one hand you benefit from large reserves of technical people who you sense can be empowered, on the other hand their ways of working have been entrenched with different goals in mind.

In this event, moderated by Dataiku your peers will discuss:

  • How to federate training across business units and skill levels to generate a common language that will facilitate use of data?
  • Principles that make using and sharing data with colleagues as natural as email, calling, IM (hint: dashboards aren’t enough!)
  • Governance approaches that encourage upskilling rather than making novices afraid to push their own development further

Speaker:

Shaun MCGirrAI Evangelist, Dataiku

Shaun McGirr is a data leader with experience across official statistics, academia, consulting, and now data science in a large automotive services company. He recently achieved minor stardom in a documentary

Data Science Pioneers, coining the phrase “things that happen 35% of the time, happen ALL the time” to explain why quite likely outcomes are often dismissed out of hand. Shaun believes the toughest part of doing data well is finding the right questions and ensuring the answers will actually, push a lever to change the world, a theme developed further in his podcast Half Stack Data Science.
